What is ballast?

Types of Ballast Products and Their Applications
Today, there are many types of ballast products available on the market. The most common type is lead shot—small pellets of lead used to add weight to vessels. Lead shot is effective but can be expensive. Other types include lead blocks, punchings, and steel billets.

One of the most common uses of lead ballast is in aircraft. Lead is used in the nose, wings, and tail sections to add stability and prevent the aircraft from tipping. It is also used in landing gear to absorb shock during takeoff and landing.
Marine
Lead ballast is widely used in the maritime industry. It helps provide stability and prevents capsizing. Lead is often placed in the keel of a boat to ensure it sits properly in the water and is not blown off course by strong winds.
