Using lead blocks as ballast

Ballast is a material commonly used in boats and ships to provide stability. It is also frequently used in hot air balloons. The word comes from the French verb ballaster, meaning “to load with stones.” Lead blocks have been used as ballast since at least the early 18th century. In more modern times, other materials such as iron, steel, and concrete have also been used—though these are less sustainable than lead. The lead ballast blocks available in our webshop are made from recycled materials.

What are lead blocks?
Lead blocks are blocks of lead used as ballast. They are typically the size of a brick and are available from us in various sizes and weights. Lead has a very high density, making it ideal for ballast applications. It is also relatively inexpensive and extremely durable. Lead can last decades before needing replacement, especially when used as ballast—it wears down very little.

Why use lead blocks?
There are several reasons why lead blocks are often used as ballast:

High density: As mentioned, lead is very dense. A small block of lead can add significant stability.
Cost-effectiveness: Lead is relatively inexpensive compared to other materials like iron or steel.
Corrosion resistance: Lead is not reactive with salt water, so unlike some other materials, it does not corrode over time.

How to use lead blocks
If you’re using lead blocks as ballast, there are a few important considerations:

Secure placement – Make sure the blocks are firmly fixed in place to prevent shifting while the vessel is moving.
Weight limits – Always be aware of the weight capacity of your vessel. Adding too much weight can make the boat unstable and difficult to steer.
Safety – Keep in mind that lead is a toxic metal. Avoid inhaling lead dust and handle the blocks with care.

Final thoughts
Lead blocks have been used for centuries as ballast due to their high density, durability, and affordable cost. However, they must be used with care to avoid making the vessel unstable or hard to maneuver. If you’re considering using lead blocks as ballast for your ship, keep these tips in mind.
