Ballast lead

For ballast lead, you’ve come to the right place at ballast-products.com.
Our lead blocks and lead shot are available in various quantities and sizes. In addition to standard dimensions, we also produce custom orders. This way, we offer tailor-made solutions to meet the needs of every customer, regardless of the industry you work in or the application involved.
Ballast lead for various applications
The specific gravity (density) of lead is higher than that of concrete and steel. Moreover, the material is widely available. This makes lead extremely suitable as ballast for a range of applications—especially when a structure or machine needs to be balanced that is already heavy, while space is limited. Ballast lead blocks and lead shot are widely used in shipping, as counterweights for bridges and cranes, and also for machine stabilization.
Ballast lead range
Due to its high density and wide availability, lead is often the preferred ballast material when space is limited but substantial weight needs to be balanced. We offer ballast lead in different forms, including lead blocks and lead shot.
Ballast lead blocks
The most commonly used product is the lead block. These are also available in various shapes and sizes. In our webshop, you’ll find the standard dimensions listed, but we also offer custom sizes. You can order lead blocks individually or by the pallet. Lead blocks are used when a high ballast weight is required and space restrictions are less of a concern. The lead blocks in our webshop are characterized by their manageable sizes. Need help determining how much you need? Don’t hesitate to contact us for options and pricing.
Ballast lead shot
Ballast lead shot, also known as lead pellets, allows for extremely precise weight distribution—down to the kilogram. They’re also ideal for reaching tight or awkward spaces. Lead shot has a lower specific gravity than lead blocks and is perfect as ballast in boats. A common application is to combine it with lead blocks to fill any remaining gaps. Our lead shot is available in 5 kg, 10 kg, and 20 kg bags, but can also be delivered in Big Bags. It’s a versatile bulk material and in many situations, a very economical option. The pellets are also ideal for filling smaller hollow spaces such as crevices.
In addition to lead, we also sell ballast steel.
The many advantages of using ballast lead
Thanks to its high density, you need smaller quantities of ballast lead to achieve the same counterweight compared to other materials. But that’s not the only advantage. The material is also almost 100% recycled—an appealing thought, especially if you only need it temporarily. In addition, lead is corrosion-resistant, easy to work with, and can be cast into any desired shape.
Frequently asked questions about Ballast Lead
-
Ballast lead is crucial for ensuring stable and evenly distributed weight, in boats and ships, among others. Apart from these purposes, it is also used as a counterweight for cranes and bridges, as well as for lifts and other heavy lifting machinery.
-
Specific gravity, also called specific mass, refers to the density of a material. It always looks at the mass-to-volume ratio of a material, compared to the same ratio for water. With lead, there is high mass for relatively low volume. So this metal has a high specific gravity.
-
Unfortunately, there is no standard answer possible to this question. There are special calculation formulas that allow you to determine how much ballast lead your vessel needs. An important advantage of lead is that it needs relatively little volume to form a dense mass. Ballast Products will be happy to assist you in calculating the amount of lead ballast required.
-
Ballast lead can be used in all kinds of vessels, of all shapes and sizes. It allows the boat to be better balanced and thus gain more stability. For example, ballast lead can ensure that the boat lies deeper in the water so that the wind has less of a hold on it.
